Listening Blog #3 This week I picked the song "How Deep is the Ocean" written by Irving Berlin, sung by Bing Crosby. I actually really enjoyed this song after I had listened to it more than once. It wasn't my favorite the first time but it grew on me for sure! It actually really reminded me of the song "Beyond the Sea" from Finding Nemo. That is one of my favorite songs from a movie and the styles are very similar. While that one is much happier and upbeat sounding, I thought that the singing styles were very similar and I really enjoyed it. I really love Bing Crosby's voice and his style. It's very smooth and relaxing and I always enjoy listening to him. I also think the lyrics of this song are very sweet. I love romantic songs and the lyrics of this one are definitely that. I think this style of music also lends itself well to more romantic songs as it has a slower smoother style than things like jazz or ragtime. I think that is why a lot of son...

Listening Blog #2 For my second Listening Blog, I choose the song Soldiers Joy by Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers. I thought this song provoked pretty positive emotions unless you listened super closely to the lyrics of the later verses. It got a little sad towards the end talking about how soldiers used morphine or beer to "take them away from here." I think this is probably a metaphor for them getting drunk or on drugs to be able to not think about the horrors of war. I liked how the lyrics and the music interacted. I thought the breaks between the lyrics for the music solos made the song more fun to listen to and gave you a little break from the lyrics that didn’t make much sense. I think that the fiddles in this song were used in a pretty traditional way. I thought that they fit with the tune and the lyrics of the song.
